Implant Dentures

Implant Dentures

Dentures are the go-to solution for replacing multiple missing teeth. They are usually made from a combination of dental-grade ceramic and gum-colored acrylic to mimic the oral tissues perfectly. Conventional dentures have one significant drawback, which is their poor stability. They often tend to slip from the mouth when you laugh out loud, yawn, or open your mouth wide. Implant-retained dentures solve this issue.

What are implant dentures?

Dental implants are metal studs placed directly in the jawbone to support prosthetic teeth. In most cases, they are coupled with a ceramic crown to replace a single missing tooth. But, multiple dental implants can be placed in the jawbone to support dentures, which is an ingenious way to keep them stable. Also, dental implants offer added advantages that conventional dentures do not.

How are implant dentures placed?

When you visit our dental practice for a consultation, we will thoroughly diagnose your condition and determine your candidacy for implants and dentures. Optimum jawbone volume is a major contributing factor to determine the candidacy for implants, which otherwise could lead to poor stability and loosening of the implants. X-rays and digital scans are quite helpful for this diagnosis.

Next, dental implants will be placed in the jawbone at predetermined positions. The dentist will determine the number of implants and their positions, after which you will be prepared for the surgery. Next, local anesthesia will be administered, and the implants will be placed in the bone. A healing period of a few months will be suggested to allow the bone to fuse with the implant. Scans and digital photographs of the mouth will be taken to fabricate the dentures, which will be available after the healing period is completed.

The dentures will be placed on the implants, and the slots provided beneath the dentures allow the implants to get locked in place. This gives them excellent stability and keeps them from getting displaced or slipping off from their positions. What’s more impressive is that the implants ensure better jawbone health as they prevent their shrinkage and deterioration.
